Seth Apter, writer for Near Say, a blog for ‘NYC’s insider neighborhood news’, spotted Alexander Calder’s IXE at the Vojtech Blau booth at the NY Spring Show.

After moving to Sache, France near Aubusson in the early 70′s, Alexander Calder took a strong interest in tapestry leading him to partner directly with Aubusson weavers, particularly Atelier Pinton Frêres, and produce a series of spectacular tapestries. Calder’s deliberately restrictive color palette and his bold, simplified forms were perfectly suited to tapestry revived by Jean Lurçat flourishing in France mid-century.

Dimensions: 6 ft. 4 in. x 5 ft. 3 1/2 in.

Sonia Delaunay is widely recognized as one of the greatest translators of a modernist consideration of color and form to the material and texture of tapestry. Her language of animated, curving compositions of pure color does not pass through Cubism, as most of her contemporaries did, but rather dashes directly toward complete abstraction. Reflecting her stature in the world of art mid-century, Sonia Delaunay was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition of her work at the Louvre in 1964.

Three rare and exquisite tapestries from the Vojtech Blau collection have been highlighted in the new hardback, Gloria F. Ross and Modern Tapestry, published by Yale University Press, 2010. This excellent survey of modern tapestry’s masters is written by Ann Lane Hedlund, curator of ethnology at the Arizona State Museum and Director of the University’s Gloria F. Ross Tapestry Program, and Grace Glueck, an art reporter, editor, and critic. The following is an excerpt from the Yale University Press announcement:

‘Gloria F. Ross and Modern Tapestry’ features the collaborative work of 28 acclaimed modernist painters and sculptors…with several dozen traditional-yet-innovative weavers in France, Scotland, and the Southwestern United States. Brief biographies of the artists, letters, notes, sketches, and photographs illustrate the practical and aesthetic challenges that occupied Gloria Ross for over three decades.
