History

Vojtech Blau founded Vojtech Blau Inc. in 1962 shortly after arriving from Prague, Czechoslovakia. Possessing a gifted eye and 15 years of experience as an Oriental rug dealer, he began building his inventory piece by piece. In 1968, he opened his first gallery in the prominent Park Bernet Building at 980 Madison Avenue. A pioneer in his field, Vojtech Blau, elevated the importance and value of antique carpets by providing his clients with a new sensibility and respect for the art.  In 1979, Mr. Blau moved to his renowned gallery to 800 Fifth Avenue where he continued to build discerning clientele to match his growing rug and now tapestry collection. Vojtech Blau upheld a reputation as the premier rug and tapestry dealer in the United States throughout his highly respected career.

Developing an interest in her father’s collection and business at an early age, Simona Blau worked with her father throughout her childhood and educational years. After graduating with a degree in Art History, she formally joined the business in the early 1990’s. Inspired to take Vojtech Blau Inc. in a new direction, Vojtech and Simona decided to focus his well-established business exclusively on tapestries.  The two amassed one of the finest private collections of antique tapestries from the 16th to 18th centuries. Under Simona’s guidance the company has expanded their collection to include modern tapestries from the 20th century.

Upon Mr. Blau’s death in 2000, Simona decided to carry on her father’s legacy and continue Vojtech Blau Inc. privately.
